Suivre Catherine

Following Catherine
2007 - 94 min. - fiction (with real stuff) - digital video
French with English subtitles

Animated sequences, documentary and fiction intermingle
in constant interplay with reality in this film diary telling
the story of a 40 years old student in Paris.
A fanciful yet acurate view
- blending irony, tenderness
and gravity -
of a mid-life assessment.

presentation

Undertaken in the year 2000 as a “diary of doubt” and shot bit by bit until 2006, Following Catherine was initially a documentary, almost a family film: like a means of experiencing the world through the whims of a searching gaze (see Amalgames). One day, the editor (and filmmaker) Fernand Bélanger suggested squeezing reality to bring out the juice of fiction. I spent an extraordinary summer with him, in the countryside, editing the film.
Sometimes, we ended our day on a wonderful cinematic problem. The next morning, he’d arrive with an unexpected solution, full of inventiveness. I had the impression that he never rested.
